PCT Gear Review: 700 Miles of Hiking Insights (2026)

As I trekked through the Sierra Nevada Mountains, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and accomplishment. The trail was a test of endurance, and I was determined to make the most of it. My gear was my constant companion, and I was eager to share my thoughts on the items that had served me well so far. From the Ridge Merino wool hoody that kept me dry and odor-free, to the ZPacks camp shoes that provided comfort and support, each piece of gear played a crucial role in my journey. However, as I reached the midway point, I realized that my pace had slowed, and my energy levels were waning. It was time to reassess and make some adjustments.

One of the most surprising discoveries was the importance of proper hydration. I had been drinking plenty of water, but I realized that I was still dehydrated. I made a conscious effort to drink more and to ensure that I was getting enough electrolytes. This simple adjustment made a significant difference in my energy levels and overall well-being.

Another area that required attention was my footwear. I had been wearing Topo Ultraventures, but they had developed some durability issues. I decided to switch to a different pair of shoes, and I was pleased with the results. The new shoes provided better support and comfort, and I was able to maintain my pace without any discomfort.

As I continued my journey, I also made some adjustments to my sleeping system. I added loops to my Enlightened Equipment Enigma quilt to attach it to my Zenbivy 1/2 sheet. This simple modification helped to trap heat in and keep me warm during the night. I also learned that I wanted my thermarest wide air mattress inflated just enough to keep me off the ground when laying flat.

One of the most memorable moments of my journey was reaching the midway point. With a simple step, I was closer to Canada than Mexico! It was a moment of pride and accomplishment, and I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a unique and challenging journey.

Overall, my journey through the Sierra Nevada Mountains has been a test of endurance and a celebration of the human spirit. I have learned a great deal about myself and my capabilities, and I am eager to continue my journey and explore the world beyond.
